Discerning God's Work In The World: Tips From The Times For Preachers: Warning: Avatar may be taintedMonday, December 21, 2009Warning: Avatar may be taintedA great loss is about to occur--Peter Steinfels' biweekly column, "Beliefs," is about to disappear from The New York Times. However, perhaps this vacuum will be partially filled by their new op-ed columnist Ross Douthat (see earlier blog entry about Karen Armstrong). His column today, about Avatar, is a brilliant short piece about the pantheistic non-theology espoused in that movie. He correctly cites Dancing With Wolves, Star Wars, The Lion King, and even Pocahontas as examples of the genre. I doubt if I'd agree with Mr. Douthat about political issues, but the man knows a thing or two about Christian doctrine.
