Fleming Rutledge is a preacher and teacher known throughout the mainline Protestant denominations of the US, Canada and parts of the UK. She is the author of seven books and has received a grant from the Louisville Foundation to complete a book about the meaning of the Crucifixion.
One of the first women to be ordained to the priesthood of the Episcopal Church, she served for fourteen years on the clergy staff at Grace Church on Lower Broadway at Tenth Street, New York City. Fleming and her husband celebrate their 50th anniversary in 2009 and have two daughters and two grandchildren. She is a native of Franklin, Virginia.

This was an article about an exhibition of Rembrandt drawings in Boston. Most New Yorker writers would not be caught dead near Christian belief, but this particular writer understood something. He wrote about “Rembrandt’s wonderful sense of Christianity: the sacrifice of Jesus dropped like a bomb into history, blowing everything askew.” (Peter Schjeldahl, The New Yorker, 11/10/03). More sins of omission this Holy Week Eastern Congo is now suffering the world’s worst current human rights crises, with a death toll outstripping that in the Darfur region of Sudan, the top relief official of the UN, Jan Egeland, said in Geneva. “It is beyond belief that the world is not paying more attention.”...He said the toll amounted to “one tsunami every six months, year in and year out, for the last six years.” The New York Times “World Briefing,” 3/17/05.
